“Learn how to sing correctly so you can screw it all up when you sing songs.” When I say that to my students they tend to think I’ve lost some marbles. “Why should I waste time and money studying with a brilliant, handsome and amazingly talented teacher (I kind of added that last part myself), if I’m going to go against what you teach me when I sing songs?”

Actually, that’s a good question. Let’s examine my answer:

The human voice has the amazing ability to actually change its quality. It can sound nasal, like an old time country singer or blues singer. It can sound breathy like a soft ballad singer. It can sound husky and “throaty”, like Bullwinkle or Sylvester Stallone. It can sound brassy and irritating. It can sound “croony” like Bing Crosby or Michael Buble doing soft intimate ballads. It can sound like a flute when Barbara Streisand or Mariah Carey sing in their beautiful and haunting high range.

It can sound full, rich and even “operatic”.

Name another instrument that can actually change its natural quality as dramatically and as drastically. Well, the guitar can do it, but only with the help of effects pedals. The trumpet can change its quality somewhat if the player is very skilled or they use a mute. The piano is pretty much stuck with one sound quality, although great players can use that one quality to evoke many moods.

But the human voice can actually change its quality when the singer wants to make it happen. However, that singer needs to practice and develop the different sounds in order to use them to their best advantage. Too many potentially great singers are unable to achieve their potential because they sing with only one or two of the many possible qualities. They mistakenly believe that because their sound is nasal or breathy, they are limited to sining only certain kinds of songs.

The full, rich and powerful voice is the most difficult to develop, and yet it defines the great pop, rock, country or gospel singer. Do they use that powerful quality all of the time? No. Most of their vocal quality throughout a song may be soft, or nasal or breathy, etc. But when the song calls for power and excitement that quality is in there, ready to be used.

Start by developing the best, richest and brightest voice you can get. You might have to work with a teacher to achieve this. Then, singing with the other qualities is easy. The goal is to develop and perfect as many different qualities as you can. Then you have an arsenal of possibilities to call on for different songs.

Guitar players have a selection of “effects pedals” to alter their sound from clean to distorted, from pure to reverb or delayed sound. Your “pedals” are inside your creative mind. Learn to use them and you will be a much better singer.

Breathing for Singing

Singing and speaking are based on breathing.
When you sing or speak air is pushed through your vocal chords – this makes them vibrate to produce the sound of your voice… obviously this means that breathing control is essential for singing
Breathing for singing is regulated by the ensemble of your diaphragm, your intercostal muscles and your abdominal muscles
Your diaphragm is a dome shaped muscle at the bottom of your rib cage; it moves downward (your belly rises somewhat) while you are inhaling and it moves upward while you are exhaling (your belly deflates somewhat)… what is important for your diaphragm is that it has the space to function properly – that is provided by the proper posture outlined in my previous post… your diaphragm is the key muscle for breathing, thus it is obviously very important, yet for singing it is equally important to work with your intercostal and abdominal muscles
When you breathe air is going into your lungs and for singing you want to make your lung capacity expand because that air is the ‘fuel’ of your voice
You increase your lung capacity by using your intercostal muscles which are the muscles in between your ribs – as you inhale and stretch your capacity to expand your intercostal muscles (your chest) your lungs also expand because your ribs and lungs are attached to each other
You do not have to think about taking in a lot of air by grasping at or gulping the breathe; all you have to think about is moving and stretching your intercostal muscles to allow you chest and lungs to expand – then air comes in automatically and this is how to breathe quickly and quietly
When you start to sing be sure that your ribs do not collapse (keep your chest lifted off your waist as stated in the posture post)… if you do allow your ribs to collapse you lose control and tone
Instead of collapsing your ribs keep them expanded; hold your abdominal muscles in and gently lift them up to ensure that your chest stays lifted (this is not so much a sucking your belly in; it is more that your abdominal muscles are firm and toned to provide support)
The support of your abdominal muscles also:
Takes the strain off your vocal chords
Helps you to control your voice
And it also helps to increase your vocal range and volume level

The Basics: Step1

Good Posture releases your Singing Voice

Proper posture is vital while singing because your body is your instrument
Your posture effects the position of your larynx (your larynx is your voicebox; your larynx houses your vocal folds/chords; sound is generated in your larynx, and it is also where pitch and volume are manipulated – strength of expiration from your lungs also contributes to loudness)
Your posture also effects your body’s breathing mechanisms and your supporting muscles
The best posture position for singing is standing so that you are sure that your diaphragm, which is the muscle for breathing, is free to function properly
Stand with your feet flat on the floor, place your feet shoulder width apart and slightly turned out; balance your weight evenly over both feet and allow it to be somewhat forward toward the balls of your feet rather than your heels

Avoid…

Shifting your weight to one side by ’sitting’ into one hip
Do not lock your knees
Do not over-tense your thighs
Do not lift your chin so that the back of your neck shortens

Do…

Relax, be at ease yet, alert not collapsed
Relax your shoulders back and down
Lift your chest off your waist without straining (again – free your diaphragm)
Lengthen the back of your neck and be sure that your neck and head can move freely and your throat feels open
If you are in a situation where you will be seated while singing:
Sit with your hips higher than your knees so that your abdominal muscles can support your voice
Maintaining a good posture makes you feel good about yourself; in turn this gives you confidence to be able to give a good performance

Have you ever noticed that a person who is out of tune actually has a warm, beautiful, free, effortless, confident, resonant voice?

No – of course you haven’t, because the person who consistently sings off key also sings with a restricted sound. It may be forced, held-back, pressured, tense, wobbling or restricted in some other way – in all cases the sound is restricted and is not free!

Imagine a properly tuned guitar with strings that are somehow restricted from vibrating freely. Here it is easy to see and understand why it does not generate a pleasant sound. Just as a guitar string is able to vibrate freely when there is nothing hindering it, your voicebox is able to generate pleasant sounds when there is nothing restricting it (like all that trying and worrying about singing in key which happens to use the wrong side of your brain for singing).

In this light a very effective approach to singing in key is to discover your true voice so that you can release the sound and sing with freedom and confidence. You can do this on your own through trial and error; in your exploration you will eventually discover that singing on key is more a muscle concern than your ability to hear musically. Unfortunately doing this on your own means that the price you pay in terms of time and the risk of more problems is quite high.

Thus finding a good vocal technique teacher who understands your problem and situation, and, one who can teach you to release your sound through proper technique, would be the most beneficial way to discover and develop your true voice. This is by far the most efficient and therefore best approach for you to be able to truly sing with the freedom you want – and naturally be in key!

How to sing in key?

The best way to overcome difficulties with singing in key is to get singing lessons – here’s why.

Singing in key, or with correct pitch as it is also called, is one of the main concerns and goals for singers of all experience levels. Obviously this is important because singing in key is what makes singing different from speaking. Folks who sing out of key get noticed for their not very pleasant sound while the voices of those who sing with proper pitch are welcomed and applauded.

So how do you learn to sing in key?

Many people who have difficulty singing in key have been told that they are tone deaf. And although that is possible in very rare cases; it is simply not true for the vast majority of people because the fact is that most of the world’s people sing naturally; for example: music making and singing is common to most religions and indigenous cultures.

The problem of not singing in key is generally understood as a situation of not listening to yourself. Thus a common prescription for resolving this difficulty is to develop your ear and fine-tune your ability to hear musically.
